Yes. Those three cover most of the heaters in the Fox Valley, and we carry the common failure parts for them. We service both gas heaters and heat pumps, including units we did not install.
Almost always water chemistry. The heat exchanger is copper, and pool water that sits acidic eats it from the inside. Water below about 7.2 pH, low total alkalinity that lets pH swing, and running the heater right after shocking are the three habits that shorten its life the most. Low flow does its own damage by letting water boil against the tubes. A heat exchanger that failed at five years almost never failed because the part was bad.
It depends on which part failed and how old the unit is. Ignitors, pressure switches, thermostats, gas valves, and control boards are routine repairs at almost any age. A failed heat exchanger on a heater past ten years is usually the point where replacement makes more sense, because the exchanger is the expensive part and the rest of the unit has aged alongside it. We tell you which situation you are in before any work starts.
Eight to twelve years is the normal range for a gas heater here. Which end you land on is decided almost entirely by water chemistry and by whether the heater was properly winterized every fall. Freeze damage and acidic water are what take heaters out early, not hours of use.
That is a winterization failure surfacing, not a spring failure. Water left in a heater over an Illinois winter freezes and splits the exchanger or the header, and nothing looks wrong until the first time you try to fire it. This is the most common heater repair we see in spring, and it is the reason a proper blow-out at closing matters.
