A rising screech or a grinding rumble almost always means the motor bearings are failing. It will not fix itself and it gets worse until the motor seizes. A pump that hums but will not spin is usually a bad start capacitor or an impeller jammed with debris. Both are much smaller repairs if you catch them early.
Air is getting in somewhere on the suction side. The usual suspects are a loose pump lid, a dried-out lid O-ring, water sitting below the skimmer mouth, a packed skimmer or pump basket, or a cracked fitting between the skimmer and the pump. Bubbles in the pump basket or streaming from the returns point straight at it.
Use the pressure gauge, not the calendar. When it reads 8-10 psi above its clean baseline, the filter needs attention. Sand media generally gets replaced every 5-7 years, cartridges get cleaned several times a season and replaced every 2-3 years, and DE grids need periodic inspection for tears.
The most common causes are a dirty filter starving the heater of flow and tripping the pressure switch, a gas supply issue, or a fouled ignition or flame sensor. In Illinois we also find a fair number of heaters that hosted mice or wasps over winter. Start by cleaning the filter, then call. Heater diagnostics are not a DIY job.

A motor under about eight years old is usually worth repairing. Older single-speed motors are often better replaced outright: federal efficiency standards mean most replacement pumps today are variable-speed, and the drop in electricity cost frequently pays back the difference within a few seasons. Heaters past 12-15 years with a corroded heat exchanger are generally replacement candidates.
