What a salt pool actually is
The single most common misconception is that salt water pools are chlorine-free. They are not. A salt chlorine generator passes water over electrically charged plates, splitting dissolved salt into chlorine. The same sanitizer that comes in a bucket, produced on demand instead of poured in by hand. When that chlorine finishes its work it reverts to salt, and the cycle repeats.
The salinity is low enough that most swimmers barely notice it. Seawater runs around 35,000 ppm; a salt pool sits at roughly 3,000-3,500 ppm, closer to a human tear than to the ocean.
The ten-year cost picture
Salt costs more to start and less to run, so the comparison only makes sense over the life of the equipment rather than in the first season.
- Up front: a salt system means buying and installing the generator and control unit, often with electrical work at the equipment pad. Traditional chlorine has essentially no equipment cost.
- Per season: salt pools consume far less purchased sanitizer. Chemical spend typically drops substantially, though you still buy acid, alkalinity adjusters, and stabilizer.
- Cell replacement: plan on a new cell every 3-7 years. This is the recurring cost people forget when they run the numbers.
- Electricity: the generator adds a modest but real amount to the pool’s running cost.
- Net effect: salt tends to reach break-even somewhere in the middle of that first cell’s life, then stays ahead. Provided the cell reaches its full lifespan.
What changes about your weekly routine
The real appeal is not cost, it is consistency. Manual chlorination means dosing up and drifting down between visits, so the pool swings between over- and under-sanitized. A generator produces steadily, which is why salt pool water tends to feel softer and irritate less. Worth knowing: the stinging eyes and heavy "chlorine smell" people blame on chlorine are actually chloramines and out-of-range pH, and a well-managed salt pool avoids both more easily.
What does not change is testing. Salt pools still need pH, alkalinity, stabilizer, and salinity checked and corrected, and salt systems push pH upward over time, so acid demand is often higher, not lower. Anyone selling a salt pool as maintenance-free is overselling it. It removes a chore; it does not remove the chemistry.
The two Illinois-specific factors
First, hard water. Fox Valley water carries enough calcium that scale builds on the cell plates, and a scaled cell stops producing chlorine long before its rated life is up. Periodic inspection and descaling is the entire difference between a cell that lasts three years and one that lasts seven, and it is the maintenance step most owners skip.
Second, winter. The cell must be removed at closing, cleaned, and stored indoors. A cell left plumbed in with water in it will crack in the first hard freeze, and that is a wholly avoidable replacement. Any closing on a salt pool should include pulling the cell. If your closing service does not, ask why.
Salt is also mildly corrosive over years to certain natural stone coping, untreated metal railings and ladders, and some older heater components. At pool salinity the effect is slow, but it is worth having someone look at your specific deck and equipment before converting rather than after.
Who should convert, and who should not
Convert if you swim frequently, dislike the weekly dosing routine, are sensitive to chlorine spikes, and plan to keep the pool long enough for the equipment to pay for itself. Owners who heat and use their pool all season get the most from it.
Stick with traditional chlorine if the pool sees light seasonal use, if you are planning to sell within a couple of years, if your deck is a salt-sensitive natural stone you do not want to risk, or if you would rather not add another piece of equipment to winterize. Neither choice is wrong. They are different trade-offs, and the marketing around salt tends to obscure that.
